Our Story

Frank and Margaret Taylor moved with their young family to Gabane in 1974 to start up Pelegano Village Industries.  Their vision was to create opportunities in the then impoverished village using abundant local natural resources.  More than fifty years later it is still a thriving centre for crafts, pottery and metalwork.

The chief allocated them this valley cradled in the nook of the hill to plant indigenous trees to reclaim the eroded land.  As the trees thrived, they provided for the processing of fruit such as morula, mogorogorowane (monkey orange) and mmilo (African medlar), for food and natural oils.  It became known as Ditlhareng, Place of Trees.

The stone and thatch houses, drawing from Tswana architecture and local materials are nestled among the trees and boulders on the edge of the hills.  They were built over time as homes for the family, for friends, and  to provide income for the research.  Places to enjoy the peace and beauty of nature, while enjoying beautful views over the village, its fields, and across to the skyline of Gaborone.  We are pleased to share this special place with you.
